The Power of Prioritizing: Choosing What Truly Matters
When it comes to chasing your dreams, especially travel, it’s all about priorities. You don’t have to wait until some magical “financial freedom” date to see the world. You just have to decide what matters most and put in the work to make it happen.
At 22, I’ve learned that travel isn’t just for those with big salaries or endless free time. It’s for anyone willing to make it a priority. For me, that meant saying “no” to fancy dinners, expensive nights out, and other short-term splurges. Instead, I directed that money toward experiences that truly matter: new cities, cultures, and adventures I’ll remember forever. The key is asking yourself: What do I really want? What is going to make me happy? When you’re honest about what truly brings you joy, it becomes easier to prioritize your time, money, and energy toward it.
Making Travel Possible
Part of my strategy has been identifying what I truly want in life and then working for it. Before taking on extra work or making any financial decisions, I spent time asking myself: What are my goals? What kind of life do I want to live? Once I was clear on my priorities: travel, financial stability, and freedom, everything else fell into place.
On top of my full-time job, I took a weekend job at a restaurant. At first, I worried it would feel like a grind, but here’s the thing: hard work doesn’t even feel hard when you know exactly what you’re working toward. Every extra shift became meaningful because all the money I earned went straight into my travel fund. That way, each hour I worked wasn’t just “another day at a job,” it was another dollar closer to my next adventure, another step toward exploring a new city or culture I’d been dreaming about.
But prioritizing travel doesn’t mean sacrificing your future. I still make sure to stay on top of retirement contributions, savings, and investments. The key is balance: when your goals and priorities are clear, you don’t have to compromise. You can save, invest, and plan for the future, all while funding the experiences that make life rich and fulfilling. By putting intention behind every choice, work and money stop being a burden and start being tools that help you build the life you actually want.
The Power of Prioritizing
Traveling while working full-time requires intentional choices and clarity about what matters most to you. For me, I’ve known for a long time that travel is my top priority. That doesn’t mean I never go out, it just means I choose experiences that truly align with my goals. I’d rather spend a night out exploring a new city abroad than spend the same night drinking locally. Every decision, big or small, reflects what I value most.
Prioritizing travel also shows up in how I manage my money. I cook almost all of my meals at home, limit eating out, and make conscious choices about where my dollars go. The money I save isn’t just “extra cash," it’s redirected toward my travel fund, my brokerage account, or my savings. By highlighting your priorities in your budget, every dollar you spend or save becomes intentional. Sacrifices aren’t about deprivation, they’re about creating space for the things that truly bring you joy and growth.
The beauty of prioritizing travel isn’t just in the trips themselves, it’s in the mindset you cultivate. You learn discipline, resourcefulness, and the joy of putting your goals first. You realize that you can work, save, and still live fully in the moment. Each dollar saved, each extra effort made, isn’t just money, it’s freedom, adventure, and the ability to create memories that last a lifetime.
Your Life, Your Choices
You don’t have to wait. With clear priorities, hard work, and smart financial choices, travel can fit into your life, even at 22, even on a tight budget, and even while working full time. The key is knowing what you value most and putting in the effort to make it happen.
Travel isn’t about waiting for the perfect time, it’s about making it a priority, working for it, and enjoying every moment along the way.
